American Bureau of Shipping

The American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) develops "Rules" for building and classing which cover a range of vessels from offshore mobile drilling units to concrete vessels and sophisticated research and mining ships.

ABS establishes "Rules" for classification, which are concerned with the periodic survey of these vessels, assuring fitness for their intended service. The information in ABS publications reflects current technology as established and updated by the Bureau's Technical Committees. The ABS has offices throughout the world.

About ABS
The American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) is one of the world's leading ship classification societies. The primary purpose of ABS is to determine the structural and mechanical fitness of ships and other marine structures for their intended purpose. It does this through a procedure known as classification.

ABS establishes and administers standards, known as Rules, for the design, construction, and operational maintenance of marine vessels and structures.
