IHS Australia designed, developed and delivered the Honda Electronic Parts Catalogue (EPC) for Honda Australia MPE, a system to better manage and distribute Honda parts catalogues to their dealers around Australia.

In the past, new and updated Honda parts manuals were distributed via hardcopy or microfiche. IHS provided a data conversion solution for Honda converting their hardcopy Motorbike, Marine and Power Equipment parts manuals to a fully searchable information centre incorporating image linking and ordering technologies.

With the EPC, Honda dealers are now provided with fully searchable Honda models. The update cycle is now quicker and Honda dealers have faster access to the most recent models.

History
Honda had a requirement to maximise the accessibility and currency of parts information distributed throughout their dealers and agencies Australia wide.

In consultation with Honda, IHS Australia envisaged and developed a fully searchable parts information centre with powerful search and retrieval capabilities tailored to all levels of user experience. This customised CD-ROM interface incorporated links to internal pricing systems to ensure accurate part pricing.

In addition, Honda increased the ongoing support it offered its dealers by providing a faster, more efficient and easy-to-use system.

Presently
The EPC application allows dealers to browse or search all of Honda’s current models down to their individual parts. Each part is hyperlinked to the relevant part in an assembly image. From here, parts can then be selected for adding to the order form.

IHS Australia continues to provide support by maintaining, managing and updating all Honda catalogue information via an IHS in-house Honda Administration System. This involves receiving hardcopy catalogues and, using IHS’ in-house scanning and post-scanning software applications, capture and convert the data. Culminating in the production of the fully-searchable EPC CD-ROM distributed to Honda dealers Australia-wide.

The Future
Honda and IHS Australia have developed a collaborative relationship allowing the dealers to provide valuable input on what they need from the Electronic Parts Catalogue. Since its inception, the EPC has continued to develop according to Honda requirements inline with this dealer feedback. IHS Australia continues to provide support in the form of regular updates as new Honda models are released, data conversion and development of the CD-ROMs to dealers Australia-wide. IHS and Honda are now looking at providing seamless linking from the EPC to dealers’ DMS systems and providing an incremental update facility that will enable dealers to download new models via the internet.

The Solution
In order to achieve these outcomes, the decision was made to convert the information in the BCA into XML (extensible Mark-up Language). XML is a set of rules for designing text formats that let you structure your data.

XML provides a number of benefits when considering the BCA clause structure. One of the major benefits of XML is that it has a virtually unlimited capacity to electronically tag every piece of information held within the BCA. Once tagged, BCA information is stored within a text database, where it can be extracted from one central source and then displayed in a variety of formats using equipment available today and into the future.
